Bariatric Chairs: A Review of Bariatric Seating

Custom Search

Bariatric chairs are seats designed for obese or extremely overweight individuals. The term comes from the word "bariatrics," which is a branch of medicine dedicated to the study, treatment and prevention of obesity.

Bariatric chairs should be able to hold at least 500 pounds in weight and offer a wider seating area to ensure that larger individuals are able to sit on them comfortably and without constriction.

Typically, the term  is used to describe health professional furniture, so waiting room chairs, hospital seating or doctor's office couches and meeting areas.

For a review of some of the more popular bariatric chair manufacturers and models, keep reading.

The La-Z-Boy Communique Series

The La-Z-Boy Communique Series is a collection of health care lounge, visitor and lobby seating. The design is professional, but also functional.

However, despite the almost $1000 price tag on this product's line bariatric guest chair, it only holds up to 500 pounds. The chair is 30 inches wide, but the low weight threshold could be a problem for offices treating the very obese or with high patient traffic.

The La-Z-Boy Gratzi Series

The La-Z-Boy Gratzie Series is another line of health care lobby furniture, but lower in price than the Communique Series. Because it doesn't offer the leather or wood finishes, the chairs are priced lower. However, the bariatric chair in this product line will hold an impressive 750 pounds.

The chair also comes in a variety of configurations to mix and match - armless, one arm only and armed. The chairs are 36.75 inches wide and retail for anywhere from $400 to $800.

The Lesro Somerset Collection

Lesro is a popular manufacturer of modular seating for office and medical environments. Their Somerset collection features a heavy duty guest chair with a 500 pound capacity and a bariatric chair with a 750 pound capacity.

The chairs are made from tubular steel and are totally customizable in terms of fabric and color. They retail for anywhere from $300 to $600, depending on the number of chairs purchased, shipping and handling and the fabric covering ordered.

Stryker Bariatric Seating

Stryker is a manufacturer of hospital supplies and hospital furniture. Their Symmetry II  Bariatric seats are ergonomically designed, have removable slip covers, are covered in breathable fabric and capable of supporting up to 750 pounds. The washable slip covers are a great feature for hospital environments with a focus on sterility.

Unfortunately, the company's bariatric chairs are only 30 inches wide and, like the La-Z-Boy Communique chairs, may not be broad enough to comfortably accommodate a patient without constricting them.
