Computer Office Desks: A Guide to Great Office Desks for your Computer

Custom Search

We spend so much time focusing on finding the best ergonomic task chair, but never seem to stop and think about our computer office desks – which are half the equation. Before you buy your next computer desk, read on for what to look for in a quality desk and suggestions on some of the better ergonomic desk solutions available today.

Cable Storage

Ideally, you want to find a computer desk that offers a solution for all those cables hanging off the back of your computer and peripherals. Quality computer office desks will come with built-in holes so you can weave cabling and wiring up through the back of your desk and back to your monitor, speakers, keyboards and mouse. Without these, you could have a tangled mess of wiring on your hands.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Rather than having your desktop tower, CDs, printers and other peripheral devices all out in the open and cluttering your workspace, look for a computer desk that has the storage capacity to tuck it all away.

While an open-concept desk may seem like a good idea, you'll soon find your work surface overrun with wiring, papers, files and print cartridges. To keep a clean desk, look for a desk with specific computer and file storage drawers or cabinets.

Ergonomics

Unique or structurally interesting desks might strike a note in the store, but you should stop and think about how these desks will actually perform. Ideally, you want a desk that's at the perfect height, allowing you to sit comfortably with your feet on the floor and still reach the work surface without straining. If you can, measure out an ideal desk height before you go shopping. Your back will thank you.

Great Desks

Sit to Stand Desk by Relax the Back

Though pricey (retails for almost $1700), the Sit to Stand Desk is adjustable, powered  and designed to relieve stress on your back and muscles. Essentially, we all know that sitting hunched over a keyboard all day isn't good for your back.

This desk allows you to automatically raise or lower the desk from a low sitting position to a tall standing position. This ergonomically correct workstation also comes with built-in cable passes and optional storage.

Airtouch Desk by SteelCase

The Airtouch desk is one of the height-adjustable computer office desks designed for the tighter budget. It offers an ergonomically correct work surface, a clutter-free appearance and is even certified for indoor air quality, meaning it's not constructed from toxic or carcinogenic materials. However, the desk lacks storage, so you'll need to purchase additional storage or cabinet solutions.
