The Eames Chair was first developed in 1956 and sold by the Herman Miller company. Today, it’s an iconic lounger with a massive following, a huge upsell value in the used furniture market and a permanent place in the New York Museum of Art. To learn more about the Eames Lounge Chair and its accompanying ottoman, read on. Developing the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman Design The Eames Chair and ottoman were designed by Ray and Charles Eames. The chair features three curved plywood pieces that make up the shell of the chair. The plywood shells fit around the leather cushions, creating a completely curved form. The chair’s head rest and back rest are the same size, and so are the ottoman and the seat cushion. This identical proportion creates an image of symmetry in the chair. What really makes the Eames Chair unique is its use of unique materials like plywood and zippers. Instead of attaching the seat cushions to the chair frame with staples or upholstery, the Eames used zippers to connect the cushions to a plastic backing that then attached to the plywood using invisible rings and clips. Finally, the Eames add hidden shock mounts along the armrests. This meant the exterior of the chair wouldn’t be marred by the appearance of bolts or screws. The Eames Lounger’s Rise to Popularity After its release, the Eames Chair appeared on the Arlene Francis’ Home program, a popular NBC show, in 1956. After the chair debuted, the Herman Miller furniture company launched a massive advertising campaign touting the chair’s versatility, comfort and undersigned, yet chic look. The ads showcased the Eames lounger chair and ottoman in everything from a Victorian-style parlor to a modern bachelor’s pad to a grandmother’s front porch. The Eames Chair Today The Eames Chair and Ottoman remain in production today and continue to be produced by the Herman Miller company in North America. Of course, like any iconic design, there are numerous knockoffs and similar copies. However, despite numerous copies coming out of China and Europe, Herman Miller and Vitra (the European distributor of the chair) are the only two companies that sell the chair branded with the Eames name. Today, the Eames Lounge chair retails for close to $3200 with the Ottoman. However, more expensive models are available depending on the type of leather or veneer chosen for the chair. The Used Market For Eames Chairs There is a massive market for used Eames Chairs and Ottomans. For example, the original rosewood veneer chairs will sell at auction for as much as $7000. When hunting down a valuable Eames Chair, most collectors look for early model chairs in pristine condition. See also: All Site Articles for Furniture Home Tips
