Home Computer Desk: How to Build a DIY Computer Desk for Your Home

Custom Search

Home computer desk construction is simple if you have a basic knowledge of carpentry and access to a few essential tools. This is a nice alternative to preconstructed cheap computer desks.

For easy-to-follow, step-by-step instruction on how you can build your own DIY computer desk for less than $25, keep reading.

Tools and Supplies You’ll Need to Build a Desk:
  • Power drill
  • A sheet of primed MDF particle board ($4-$12 at most hardware stores, depending on the size)
  • 4 table legs (Ikea sells legs for $5, but Ace Hardware sells a number of models for around $3-$4)
  • Wood screws
Building Your Home Computer Desk

Before you waltz into Lowe’s and order a massive sheet of MDF particle board to make the world’s biggest computer desk, stop and think about load. The smaller your table-top surface, the sturdier your desk will be.

If you opt for a standard desk size sheet of MDF, you should be fine to support a basic desktop system, printer, speakers and a few books without needing to put in any extra supports.

Next, you want to look for table legs that have a base plate at the top to make screwing them in easier. Otherwise, you’ll have to start building frames for your hanger bolts and the whole thing could get messy. So, buy table legs that come with a base plate that can be simply screwed to any surface.

Now, you want to actually attach your table legs to the desk top surface. Some table legs will come with attachments that have pre-defined screw holes, meaning all you have to do is find the holes and use a wood screw to screw in the legs.

That’s it! You’re done – you just built a home computer desk for under $25 and you did it all by yourself. For some ideas on how you can spruce up your DIY Desk – keep reading.

Add-ons and Design Ideas for Your DIY Desk

Install a Keyboard Drawer

If you’re an Ikea hacker, you can buy a simple and basic pull-out keyboard shelf from Ikea for $9.99. It comes with bolts and screws and can be easily bolted to the underside of your DIY desk for some serious ergonomic comfort.

Add Drawer Space

Add a bit of mobile drawer space by putting casters on an old filing cabinet or night stand. Make sure it’s short enough to wheel under the side of your desk and you’ll have built-in, custom storage.

Add a Splash of Color

To really make your DIY home computer desk unique splash a bit of color on it. Most MDF particle board comes primed, so you can paint it any color you like, from daring cherry red to a calming serenity blue.
