Kitchen Counter Bar Stools: Craft Ideas for Bar and Kitchen Counter Stools

Custom Search

Do you have a stack of old kitchen counter bar stools that seem a little too old-fashioned and boring? You can jazz them up with personalized designs that will take your stools from standard-issue to ultra-customized. For some great tips and projects that you can do right at home, keep reading.

Mosaic Top

Give that old kitchen stool a Mediterranean feel with a mosaic tile top. To create your mosaic, start by sanding down the top surface of the stool, to create a better grip for your tile adhesive.

Next, make your pattern template by tracing the shape of the top of the stool on to a piece of cardboard and cutting it out. Once you have your template, you can sketch out your tile design right onto the cardboard. When you're ready, smash or break your tile. You can use old, broken plates or buy cheap plates at a second-hand or charity shop.

Once you have your tile pieces, lay them out on the cardboard according to your pattern and leave at least a quarter inch between each piece. When the design is finished, transfer it to the top of the kitchen counter bar stools using a special tile glue and allow to dry for 24 hours.

The next step is grouting. Spread a thick layer of grout over the tiles, filling in the gaps. Remember to scrape or wipe away any excess grout when you're done and wash off the white, grout film that can be left behind on tiled surfaces. Because your stool may be a seating surface, try to ensure that the final product is both level and free from sharp edges.

Glitter or Bead Pattern

Much like the mosaic, your glitter or bead pattern is started with a basic design. Try a simple shape like a Texas star or a daisy, one that's easy to replicate with beads or glitter. Once you have your design, transfer it on to the stool top in pencil.

Then, cover the penciled design with glue or a light, transparent adhesive. Immediately after applying the glue, sprinkle on your glitter or beads according to your pattern colors, taking care not to color outside the lines.

To seal in your design forever and create a level seating surface, coat the final product with resin. You can buy it at most art supply and craft stores.

A Basic Paint Job

One of the easiest ways to transform kitchen counter bar stools are to give them a basic paint job. Start by stripping and sanding the entire stool, so that your primer and paint will properly set. Then, simply paint over your stool with a new color or design and complete your project with several coats of varnish.
