Light therapy lamps are considered part of a home component to a phototherapy or light therapy program. Light therapy has been shown to combat acne, SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and even insomnia or delayed sleep phase syndrome. Light therapy has also been effective in treating non-seasonal related depression. Treating Acne with Light Therapy Lamps Sunlight has been shown to help with the treatment of acne, but it is related to the color spectrum found in natural light. Essentially, the violet light in sunlight activates what's called a porphyrin that actually kills the bacteria that causes acne. Because the violet part of the light spectrum is outside the ultraviolet range, it also causes little to no burning or tanning. Treatment typically consists of applying the light for 3 consecutive days, therefore killing almost 99.9 percent of the bacteria found in pores. Patients typically see an improvement of 76 to 80 percent over the course of 3 months following their treatments. Patients can opt for dermatologist office visits or purchase a home light box for ongoing home use. Treating SAD with Light Therapy Naturally, the best treatment for seasonal affective disorder is sunlight, but intense artificial light can also be effective. Most lamps that are designed for light therapy use provide 10,000 lux which are directed at the eyes on an angle and from a prescribed distance, but without harmful UV exposure. Light treatment has also been established as an effective treatment for depression, provided it is undertaken daily, consistently and at the same time each day. Treating Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome with Light Therapy Delayed sleep phase syndrome is a chronic disorder that affects the timing of sleep and daily rhythms. Patients suffering from DSPS often have trouble waking up in the morning and tend to prefer sleep schedules that begin late in the morning (e.g. 4:00 am to noon). Light therapy lamps have been used to treat delayed sleep phase syndrome by exposing the patient to intense light either immediately following a wake-up alarm or just before. Treating Psoriasis and Eczema with Light Therapy The main feature of psoriasis is essentially a highly localized inflammation caused by the immune system. UV rays will, essentially, inhibit the immune system and therefore reduce the inflammation response. Light therapy for psoriasis and eczema is typically undertaken in conjunction with oral drugs. Light therapy lamps, particularly those designed for the treatment of seasonal affective disorder, should not emit ultraviolet light nor should they be used along with photosensitizing drugs, so consult your doctor before you begin a home treatment program.
