Lumbar Support Chair: A Product Comparison to Find the Best Lumbar Support Chair

Custom Search

A lumbar support chair is about a lot more than sticking a roll of cushioning in the lower back and calling it a day. A chair has to be multi-adjustable, provide adequate lumbar support and really promote good posture.

In a quest to find the best lumbar support chair, we reviewed four different popular office chairs. Keep reading to find out how each of them measured up.

The Haworth Zody Chair

Retailing for around $700, the Haworth Zody Chair is already losing points thanks to its high price tag. The chair is similar to other popular models like the Life chair and the Aeron chair, but it does have some unique distinguishing features.

As a lumbar support chair, it doesn’t actually provide a cushioned lumbar support. Instead, the chair has a curved design and plastic rings created to emulate the natural curvature of the back. However, it’s also equipped with an adjustable lumbar tension, allowing you to adjust the support in the lumbar region.

Instead of forcing your lower back out with a lumpy cushion, it uses that tension to change the shape of the chair and adapt to your back. The lumbar support on this chair can move up or down, though the new approach in the Haworth Zody lumbar support chair can take some getting used to.

Knoll Life Chair

You can find a Knoll Life Chair for as little as $500 on sale, but a deluxe model can also run you close to $900. Again, it’s a high price to pay, but if you’re willing to spend close to double that on a mattress, then why not a chair that you spend hours sitting in every day?

Like other models in its class, the Life chair is sleek and highly customizable. However, it’s best selling feature is how easy it is to maintain and upgrade. All the cushions and parts can be replaced, meaning you can upgrade your seat pads instead of having to buy a new chair.

So, while the price tag may be a high, this is a lumbar support chair that could potentially last you for a decade, rather than just a few years.

Ikea Joakim Swivel Lumbar Chair

At $170, the Ikea Joakim is a steal, but the price tag comes with a few sacrifices. For example, it can’t be precisely adjusted, though it does come with several adjustments and a good ergonomic design.

The budget chair was chosen by Wired magazine and MyBusiness magazine as the best chair in its class (under $500). And while this lumbar support chair won’t last you a decade, it can provide good, quality support for several years and with a price tag that’s actually affordable.
