Lumbar support chairs are critical to maintaining a healthy back, especially if you spend the majority of your workday sitting down. And while sitting seems pretty simple, the sad truth is most of us aren’t doing it right and our office chairs are partly to blame. To learn more about why a good lumbar support office chair is a great thing to have and how to find the right one for you, keep reading. Why You Need to Have Good Lumbar Support Back pain is one of the most common reasons for staying home sick. In fact, 80 percent of us will experience significant and debilitating back pain at some point in our lives. It’s a serious problem. The key to reducing back pain is finding a chair that has the lumbar support to not only support the back, but also allow the spine to retain its natural curve. You want to be able to feel the support in what’s called the “lumbar” region – this is the five vertebrae in the lower back. Finding the Right Lumbar Support Chairs It’s unfortunate, but most furniture is made for the average male. He’s about 5’10” and 170 pounds and he only makes up about 4 percent of the actual population. That means most lumbar support chairs, especially ones that can’t be adjusted, aren’t going to fit you properly. Instead, start by looking for a chair designed for your size. For example, most ergonomic office chair manufacturers will sell Petite models and Big & Tall models. From there, look for a chair that’s highly adjustable. Looking for Adjustability With lumbar support, it’s critical that you be able to adjust the height of the chair, the depth of the lumber support and the height of the arm rests. You also want to be able to adjust the recline of the chair. Once you’ve found your starting chair, you want to be able to adjust it so that your feet are resting flat on the floor and your back and hips are at a 90 degree angle. With your back against the back of the chair, you should be able to fit a fist between the edge of the chair and the back of your knees. Pricing Lumbar Support Chairs Often, high-end and ergonomically designed chairs don’t come cheap. You can find many models ranging in price from about $700 to $4000.00. The good news is you don’t have to spend a $1000 to get a comfortable chair with lumbar support. Typically, you can find good, adjustable lumbar support chairs that provide adequate lumbar support in the $125 to $300 range. You can also add lumbar support to a favorite chair with a lumbar cushion or even a rolled up towel. See also: All Site Articles for Furniture Home Tips
