Roman Chair: How to Use the Roman Exercise Chair

Custom Search

A Roman chair is a type of exercise equipment. It’s generally used to exercise muscles on the lower back, but it can also be used for the abs and the gluteal muscles.  The exercises are said to be great for strengthening the lower back and subsequently reducing lower back pain and tension.

To learn about some common Roman chair exercises and where you can find great deals on Roman chairs for your home gym, keep reading.

Roman Chair Exercises

The most basic exercise you can do on your Roman exercise chair is the Roman – it’s basically a hyperextension of the lower-back designed to strengthen muscles like the erector spinae.

Basically, the chair holds you in place as you bend at the waist and propel your body upwards using the lower back muscles.

Step 1 – Get into the chair

When you get into the chair, you want the support pad to be against the front of your thighs with your lower leg locked into place at the heel or ankle.

Step 2 – Bend Forward

When you’re ready, begin the Roman chair exercise by bending forward at the waist. As you bend, your upper body should come closer to the ground. You don’t have to touch the ground, just bend as long as it’s comfortable.

Step 3 – Bring Your Upper Body Back Up

When you’ve bent as far as you can without straining, use your lower back muscles to straighten out your body and bring your upper body back up. Do not bend so far as to hyperextend the curve of your back, but rather just far enough to get your back straight.

Because the lower back can be so easily injured, it’s recommended that you consult a fitness professional before you engage in Roman chair exercises.

Finding a Bargain on Roman Exercise Chairs

You do not have to spend a fortune getting a special back exercising chair to do Roman exercises, a basic Roman chair will do. You can pick one up at most fitness retailers and major department or discount stores that sell exercise equipment.

Sears sells the Cap Barbell Xodus Roman for a mere $112, a steal compared to other models, but it’s also a very basic model. For something with a little versatility, you could try the more adjustable Powerline Back Hyper Extension for $120 at Sam’s Club or the very cool Body Max for $150 at Amazon.

Before you invest in a Roman Chair for your home though, go to your local gym and try one out there. Get a feel for the exercise first and decide if it’s something you’d really be doing every other day in your home.  Remember, talk to a fitness professional first before you try it.
