Round Area Rugs: Are Round-Shaped Rugs Making a Comeback?

Custom Search

Round area rugs are experiencing a major resurgence. It’s time to stop imagining braided rag rugs laid out on the kitchen floor and start dreaming about beautifully patterned and designed rugs that can be the perfect accent piece.

But, where do round area rugs fit in? How can you use them to spice up your home décor? To learn how you can use circular rugs in your design strategy, keep reading.

Define a Living Space

Like any rug, a circular rug can really define a space. For example, an intimate grouping of furniture for conversation is easily pulled together by a striking rug. Use the rug to pull the pieces together and keep the rug under at least the front edges of the furniture.

Alternatively, you can take a quiet reading nook from being just a chair and a lamp in a corner to a well-defined space with a circular rug.

Break Up All Those Rectangular Shapes

Our rooms are rectangular. Most of our furniture is rectangular. So, why must all of our rugs be rectangular?

Round area rugs are perfect for breaking up that utilitarian look of too many straight lines. Their curves add a softness to the space that doesn’t come from a perfect square or rectangle.  This is why they work best in long, straight hallways or rooms that are too strict and straight for their own good.

Add a Touch of Interest to a Room

Let’s face it, round area rugs aren’t as common as those standard, boring, old rectangle rugs. As a result, they create a point of interest in a room. Much like a bright pillow or a stellar design piece, a beautifully designed area rug can make a room pop.

Throw a brightly colored circular rug on a wood floor and bam – you’ve got a focal point staring at you like a designer bull’s eye. And because round rugs are making such a comeback, you’ll find numerous designs and patterns that are both adventurous and beautiful.

Echo Another Round Shape in the Room

One of the basic design principles is that of echoing, whether it’s echoing a color or a shape. Round area rugs let you echo a round piece of furniture or even, perhaps, the rounded edges or features in a space’s architecture.

For example, a round area rug fits perfectly under a round table and echoes back the shape. They’re also great for playing off the curved shape of a bay window or a corner nook.

Finally, as with any design feature, remember not to overdo it. Round area rugs may be super hot this season, but that doesn’t mean you have to pepper your floors with them. Like any unique or interesting focal point, keep it to a minimum and try to limit yourself to just a few.
