Stressless Chair: A Review of the Stressless Recliner Chair

Custom Search

The Stressless chair was first built by Ekornes furniture in 1971. It was designed to be the “ultimate” recliner, one that could provide comfort and support whether in the upright or reclined position. Today, the company still does a brisk business and has over 20 different models in its recliner line alone.

You may have seen the infomercials or heard the hype, but are still wondering if the Ekornes Stressless recliner is actually worth its $1299 and up price tag? Does the leather hold up? Is it made from a high quality construction? Do they guarantee their product? For the answers to these questions and more, keep reading.

Glide System

The Stressless chair doesn't rely on a lever to recline, instead it uses two glide wheels that roll the chair back in response to your body weight. By adjusting your weight, you actually control the chair rather than snapping back and forth with the force of a traditional spring mechanism.

The glide wheels are great, move smoothly and make for a much easier transition than springs. However, the glide wheels make a small noise as you recline the chair, leading this reviewer to believe that small noise could turn into a major annoyance after years of use.

Head and Lumbar Support

The Ekornes Stressless chair has great lower back and head support that adjusts with the headrest. By default, the headrest sits up so you can watch TV in a reclined position, but can lay flat with a simply adjustment.

However, when the headrest is in the forward position, it can often feel like its forcing the head forehead, particularly if you don't have strong neck muscles. So, some users may prefer to keep the headrest in the reclined position.

Customized Sizes

A great feature of the Ekornes Stressless is that many models come in both small and large sizes. Whether you need to accommodate a smaller living space or a larger body, there's a Stressless chair for you.

Warranty

Ekornes offers customers a 10-year warranty on the internal mechanisms in all its chairs. Basically, the metal frame, headrest, lumbar system, metal springs and gliding system are all covered under their 10-year warranty.

While a lengthy warranty is great, consumers should keep in mind that warranties on the Stressless chair do not include coverage for the leather or fabric upholstery or the woodwork. In lieu of manufacturer's support, customers will have to rely on local upholsterers and wood workers.
